life of esther
, a very beautiful and clever woman, who in the year 1519-20 was living at Boulogne. She was, in the first place, the aunt of Edward Hall. On December 25th, 1521, is mentioned the fact that the King was at one time "in bed with a woman called Esther." He is frequently called "Edwyn" in these books; that is the family name of the two families, Edvyle and Edwyn, with which Queen Katherine was connected. They lived at Tixall Hall, West Malling, Kent, and had the style of gentlemen. Their family name was Edvyle, or Ethewele. In a list of the King's Household, in the reign of Henry VIII, and in other books, the names of some of the chief persons mentioned are given in Latin. Of Edward Hall the name "Ederic" occurs in various passages, and I believe that in reality he was Edvile, or Edvyle. This man, according to my belief, lived from the year 1497 to 1540. According to various writers, Edderic Hall was born between 1470 and 1480. In a note by Mr. Gurney, on page 382, in the "Duchess of Northumberland's Narrative," the name is given in Latin as Edwile, and by some it is given as Edvil. I find that in my own "Chronicles of England" I have in various places mistaken this man's name. I have called him Hall when it was Edwell; and then in another place, Edwell. In the last work, I call him Hall. On page 12, of the "Chronicle of England," under the year 1483, he is called Edwile. The writer of the book, on page 556, calls him Hall. If he was really Edwell, he must have lived some fifty years later than Edwell the King's physician, who died in 1480. The names of the two persons from whom Queen Katherine is said to have received the letter, which she had at Clifton, occur in these books; namely, Elizabeth Maresfield and Elizabeth Vernon. Elizabeth Maresfield had three brothers, all of whom lived on the borders of Wales, which fact is given by her family name, which is given as Mareshaleve. In the "Chronicle of England," on page 557, it is given as Mary's mother's surname. I believe that this Elizabeth Maresfield was the daughter of Elizabeth Vernon. In the "Misc. Memoirs of Skelton," written by Mr. James Skelton, the writer states that this Elizabeth Vernon, the sister of Queen Katherine's two nurses, was the daughter of John Vernon, who was created Lord Treasurer by Henry VII, and whose family name was Vernon, and who held the office of a Knight of the Garter. This John Vernon, by his father's side, was a descendant of King Edward III. His mother, on the other side, was the daughter of Sir William Stoyton, Constable of Pontefract Castle. Elizabeth Maresfield is called, in the "Great Chronicle of London," the daughter of a certain Richard, Lord Berkeley, who was Treasurer of the household of Prince Edward of York, afterwards King Edward IV, in the year 1459. The name of Elizabeth Maresfield is also given in this work. This Richard Lord Berkeley is said to be the father of Elizabeth Maresfield. In the "Chronicle of England," on page 556, it is said that one of the two persons who gave this letter to Queen Katherine was Sir Anthony, a Knight of the Garter, and the other was Sir William, a Baron of the Exchequer. The "great chronicle" states that one of them was a Knight of the Garter, and the other was a Baron of the Exchequer. I have, in my "Chronicles of England," called Anthony a certain person, a servant of the Duke of Buckingham, whose real name was Anthony, as a great number of books have had the names of some of these men in the most inconsistent manner. I have called Sir Anthony, or Anthony, Sir William, or William, Sir Anthony, or Anthony, Sir Anthony, or Anthony, Anthony, and Anthony, Sir William, or William. Sir William of Eltham was a friend of Queen Katherine's, who called her, as I believe, his "sister," which fact is given by his name. Elizabeth Vernon, the sister of Queen Katherine's two nurses, also called her her "sister." Sir Anthony, or Anthony, a servant of the Duke of Buckingham,.....
