"Getting out of Bed Is an Act of Worship: Bible Study" by Wayne P. Smith. Dr. Wayne P. Smith was born and reared in Greeneville, Tennessee. He was raised in a Christian home and attended public and private schools, graduating from West Greene High School in 1954. After graduating from East Tennessee State College in 1958, Dr. Smith became an ordained minister. In 1976, Dr. Smith graduated with a Doctor of Theology from Westminster Theological Seminary. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York.

At the age of 20, Dr. Smith began his ordained ministry at the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he served as a youth minister, interim associate pastor, and interim youth minister. From 1972-1979, Dr. Smith served as pastor at the MCC in the Cleveland Heights area. In 1974, he became a member of the MCC Leadership Team. The Leadership Team has functioned as a policy and strategy committee charged with addressing the spiritual, moral, and social needs of the community. For fifteen years, the team participated in community service projects to provide resources and funding for community and inner-city projects.

In 1979, Dr. Smith became the associate pastor of MCC in the Knoxville, Tennessee, area, where he continues to serve to this day. In the early 1980s, the leadership team developed the church's adult-education program and established MCC's Urban Ministries. In the late 1980s, Dr. Smith helped to establish the MCC Urban School. Today, MCC's Urban Ministries, MCC's Urban School, and MCC's Urban Ministry Institute (UMI) provide hundreds of individuals and families from MCC's neighborhoods and schools with spiritual resources, job training, and volunteer opportunities.

In 1982, Dr. Smith became the director of MCC's Urban Ministries and the leader of the MCC Leadership Team, where he continues to serve to this day. During his tenure, he has led and/or implemented six leadership training programs for hundreds of MCC staff, community leaders, pastors, and laypeople. These programs include the Pastor, Executive Pastor, Lay Leader, Community Ministries, Family Development, and the Leadership Team training programs. Dr. Smith has presented leadership and ministerial seminars to hundreds of church leaders, pastors, and laypeople from across the United States and in more than fifteen foreign countries. His presentations have included "What Has Happened to the Christian Church," "Leadership and the Church," "The Future of Christian Education," and "Ministry of Vision and Mission."

In 1987, Dr. Smith was awarded the MCC Distinguished Pastor Award and in 1988 was inducted into the Knoxville Arts and Education Hall of Fame. In 1992, Dr. Smith completed a four-year term on the Board of the Tennessee Commission on the Arts and Humanities and served as its chairperson for four years. In 1994, Dr. Smith was selected to serve on the Metropolitan Regional Advisory Committee for Knox County, which has now been reconstituted as the Metropolitan Regional Planning Commission. In 1996, Dr. Smith completed a two-year term on the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce's Community Development Committee. He serves on the board of directors for the Baptist Union of Metropolitan Knoxville and was elected as the church's executive director in 1996. Dr. Smith and his wife, Marietta, are the parents of five children and grandparents of nine.

In 2009, Dr. Smith was the recipient of the Tennessee Life of the South Award from the Tennessee Department of Human Services. In 2013, Dr. Smith received the City of Knoxville's "Serving Our City" Award for outstanding community service and in 2014 received the "Citizen of the Year" award from the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce for his outstanding commitment to the business community and city.
